How to Save Figma Community Files and Frames as Design References (Without Bloating Figma)

6 Oct 20262 min

Figma Community is one of the best sources of design references and one of the worst places to keep them. Every duplicated file is a slow, sprawling document that lives in your drafts, unsearchable by content, taking a few seconds to open and a few minutes to find anything inside.

Here is how to get the value out and leave the weight behind.

Duplicate only what you will edit

A UI kit you will build on: duplicate it. A design system whose components you will reuse: duplicate it. Everything else, which is most things, you want as a picture with a link. The distinction is "will I open this file to work in it?" If no, do not keep the file.

Export the frames that matter

  1. Open the Community file in preview, or duplicate it temporarily.
  2. Select the frame or frames you actually care about. Not the whole page.
  3. Right-click, Copy as PNG, or use the Export panel at 2x.
  4. Paste into your reference library. Delete the temporary duplicate.

Pasting is the fastest route. Copy as PNG, switch to GetRef, press paste, and the frame is saved, read for its text and colours, and tagged. Thirty seconds per frame, and no Figma file left behind.

Paste the Community URL into the reference's note or save it as the link field. Community files move and get removed, and the author deserves the credit, so keep the source.

Write the one line

Why did you keep this frame? "Clean onboarding stepper." "How they handle a 12-column dense table." That sentence is what makes the frame findable later, and it is the thing Figma itself could never tell you.

When you already have fifty duplicates

Set aside an hour. Open each, export the one or two frames you remember caring about, save them, and delete the duplicate. Most designers find that a thirty-file drafts folder becomes a hundred searchable references and an empty drafts list. For files you are not ready to delete, organizing Figma inspiration files covers a sane structure.

Common questions

Should I duplicate Figma Community files to save them?
Only if you will edit or reuse the components. For a visual reference, duplicating creates a heavy file you will never open. Export the frames you care about as images and save them to your reference library with the link back.
How do I export a Figma frame as an image?
Select the frame, open the Export section in the right panel, choose PNG at 2x, and click Export. Or copy the frame as PNG from the right-click menu and paste it straight into your reference tool.
Can I import Figma files into GetRef?
Yes. GetRef has a bulk importer for Figma exports, and pasting a copied frame saves it directly, read and tagged on arrival.
